In the heart of Spain, there is a route that is both a journey through time and a tribute to one of its most emblematic heroes: Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, baptised by the Moors of his time as Cid (the lord) Campeador.

What is the route of El Cid?

La conocida como Ruta del Cid is a touristic-cultural itinerary that crosses the provinces of Burgos, Soria, Guadalajara, Zaragoza, Teruel, Castellón, Valencia and Alicantefollowing in the footsteps of the legendary 11th century Castilian knight.

The Banishment and the Borderlands: The route begins in Burgos, where El Cid was banished by King Alfonso VI. From there, it enters the Borderlands, an area that in the time of El Cid was in constant dispute between Christians and Muslims. Today, these roads offer a blend of history and nature, with castles and fortresses standing as witnesses to the past.

The Three Taifas and the Conquest of Valencia: The traveller can continue on to the Three Taifas, regions that were once independent Muslim kingdoms, and then on to Valencia, the city that El Cid conquered and ruled until his death. This section of the route is not only rich in history, but also in Mediterranean landscapes and impressive architecture.

The Defence of the South and the Rings: The route does not end in Valencia. It extends as far as Alicante, in what is known as the Defence of the South, where the castles and coastal fortifications evoke the struggles of El Cid against the Barbary pirates. In addition, the route includes several rings, such as the Gallocanta Ring and the Maestrazgo Ring, which allow specific areas to be explored in more detail.

Its accessibility is the most characteristic feature of this route. It can be explored on foot, by bicycle, car or motorbike, with signposted routes adapted to all types of travellers. From rural paths to secondary roads, each road offers a unique experience and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the legend of El Cid.

The Ruta del Cid is more than a route; it is an adventure that invites you to discover the rich cultural history of Spain. It is a journey that interweaves history with landscape, legend with reality, and continues to inspire travellers from around the world to explore the footsteps of a hero who, more than a thousand years later, remains synonymous with bravery and honour.
